Every now and then, we receive a truly unique request. One such request involves using rubber stamps for Jewellery Makers. Not as the final product, but as a crucial tool in the creation of stunning personalised jewellery. There’s nothing more personal than incorporating your own or a family member’s fingerprint into your jewellery.

To create this personalised jewellery, several steps are involved.

One of which is our rubber stamp component. We produce a rubber die, which replicates the fingerprint in rubber. This is a meticulous process. Multiple prints of the fingerprint need to be made on paper using a special fingerprint ink pad. The Trodat 9094 fingerprint pad is ideal for this purpose—it’s small, round, and has a clear flip-top lid, making it convenient to carry and use. In Malaysia, fingerprints are often required for identification purposes, adding to the versatility of this tool.

After obtaining multiple prints, the best one for laser engraving is selected. The fingerprint’s whorls and the differentiation between the valleys and ridges must be clear. While this detail can appear perfect on paper, scanning can sometimes distort it due to pixelation. The scanner must accurately differentiate between the black ink and white paper, converting them into digital pixels without losing detail. This is crucial for the laser engraving machine, which relies on precise RGB black signals to function correctly. Any grey pixels can cause errors in the engraving, affecting the final product’s quality.

Creating the perfect print file for the laser engraving machine is a balancing act between achieving high-quality detail and managing costs. It involves time and experimentation. With practice and collaboration, Jo has mastered the process, using graphic design software to prepare the files, which helps reduce costs.

Using the vector image file, we perform further processing to prepare it for the laser machine. The laser engraving process involves two passes: the first engraves the fingerprint, and the second follows each line to add definition without burning through the rubber. This delicate process ensures maximum detail and flexibility in the tiny rubber stamps, which measure about 26 x 9mm.

Despite their small size, these rubber stamps are an essential step in Jo’s process of creating fingerprint jewellery in precious metal.
