Case Study: Custom Engraved Wooden Road Sign for a Private Lane
Read about Custom Engraved Wooden Road Sign. When it comes to small signage, durability and detail matter. At Self-Inking Stamps Ltd, we’re often asked to produce precision work across a range of materials. From corporate trophies and plaques to intricate laser engraving on wood. Recently, we completed a standout project: a beautifully crafted engraved wooden road sign for a private lane community.
This project perfectly demonstrates how laser engraving technology can deliver exceptional results in exterior signage, especially when fine detail and longevity are required.
The Brief: A Custom Engraved Wooden Road Sign with Personalised Symbols
A group of residents living along a small private lane approached us with a clear vision. They wanted a roadside sign displaying:
- The name of the lane
- Individual symbols representing each property’s unique use
- A natural timber aesthetic to complement the environment
Rather than using standard aluminium or acrylic small signage, they chose a live edge macrocarpa timber board for a more organic and distinctive finish.
They asked: Can you engrave this?
The answer was yes — but choosing the right engraving method was critical.
CNC Routing vs Laser Engraving: Choosing the Right Tool
In traditional sign making, a CNC router is often the go-to machine. It can carve deep into wood at an even depth and remove large areas efficiently. For many wood engraving projects, CNC routing works perfectly.
However, rotary tools create rounded internal corners because the cutting bit moves in circular paths. For this project, the symbols contained intricate corners and fine detail that would lose sharpness with a CNC router.
This is where laser engraving wood has a distinct advantage.
A laser beam can:
- Produce extremely fine detail
- Create sharp internal corners
- Engrave delicate linework
- Maintain clarity in small symbols
For this type of small signage project, laser engraving was the superior solution.
The Timber: Live Edge Macrocarpa
The client supplied a stunning piece of live edge macrocarpa measuring 880 x 439mm — just fitting within the bed of our laser engraving machine.

Macrocarpa is an excellent timber for engraving wood because:
- It engraves cleanly and evenly
- It produces attractive dark contrast when laser burned
- It is naturally durable for exterior use
- It is not chemically treated
This last point is important.
Laser engraving works by burning away the wood surface. Chemically treated exterior timber is unsafe to laser engrave because the burning process can release toxic gases. Fortunately, macrocarpa is untreated and perfectly suited to the process.
Preparing the Board for Engraving
Before engraving, the board was cut to size and couriered to our workshop. Once placed on the laser bed, we:
- Aligned the artwork to the natural contours of the live edge.
- Adjusted symbol placement slightly to avoid prominent knots.
- Ensured consistent margins for visual balance.
Knots in timber can create aesthetic challenges. If positioned awkwardly within a symbol, they can look like unwanted protrusions. Minor repositioning ensured a clean and professional finish.
The Laser Engraving Process
With positioning finalised, the engraving began.
Unlike shallow decorative marking, this roadside sign required deep laser engraving. Outdoor signage faces sun, rain, wind, and general weathering. To ensure longevity:
- The laser speed was reduced
- Power levels were carefully adjusted
- Multiple passes were used where necessary
The slower the laser moves, the deeper the beam penetrates the wood. This also produces a darker, charred finish — creating strong contrast that improves readability from a distance.

For trophies, plaques, and indoor signage, lighter engraving is often sufficient. But for exterior wooden signs, depth is critical.
Managing Smoke and Surface Effects
Deep laser engraving naturally produces smoke and hot gases. These can leave:
- A light gum residue
- Surface smoke staining
- A subtle “drop shadow” effect around the engraving
Sometimes this shadowing looks attractive and enhances contrast. In this case, we opted for a cleaner finish.
A light sanding removed processing marks while preserving the deep engraved detail. The result was crisp lettering and sharp symbols with a natural timber surface.
The Finished Sign Installed
Once completed, the sign was installed on a fence at the entrance to the lane. The deep engraving ensures:
- Long-term visibility
- Weather resistance
- Clear direction for visitors
- A distinctive handcrafted aesthetic
The live edge macrocarpa gives the sign personality that standard manufactured signage simply cannot replicate.

Our client was delighted with the result — and the lane now has a permanent, durable marker that reflects the character of its residents.
